akg1558886 Gustave Courbet:. Courbet was involved with the Paris Commune of 1871 and after its collapse he was tried and imprisoned in the Sainte-Pelagie prison. This painting can be identified with one mentioned in a list of works produced by the artist during his six-month imprisonment from 1871-72. Courbet began painting still lifes of flowers in the early 1860s. When he was in prison, his sisters brought him fruit and flowers as subjects for his canvases. Many of these represent fruit in landscape settings. It has been suggested that Courbet was influenced in such works by Impressionist paintings of the 1860s, but his use of line and of light and shade to emphasise the colour and shapes of the apples is predominantly traditional in character. Oil on canvas, 44.5 × 61 cm, 1871-2. London, National Gallery. Museum: London, National Gallery. Copyright: Additional permissions needed for non-editorial use.

alb3657140 After the Hunt. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 93 x 73 1/4 in. (236.2 x 186.1 cm). Date: ca. 1859.In style, scale, and composition, this work strongly resembles Courbet's first hunting scene, The Quarry, a great success at the Salon of 1857 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). The present canvas is distinguished by the assortment of dead game, including a wild boar, a partridge, a deer, and a hare, a presentation recalling precedents in seventeenth-century Flemish painting. An avid sportsman, Courbet ultimately devoted some eighty pictures to subject of the hunt. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3683241 Woman in a Riding Habit (L'Amazone). Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 45 1/2 x 35 1/8 in. (115.6 x 89.2 cm). Date: 1856.This painting of a horsewoman (in French, amazone) was long thought to represent the poet and novelist Louise Colet, muse of writer Gustave Flaubert. However, the sitter has since been identified as Madame Clément Laurier. This work, made on the occasion of her marriage in 1856, forms a pair with Courbet's portrait of her husband (1855, Milwaukee Art Museum). The artist Mary Cassatt admired this picture as "the finest woman's portrait Courbet ever did.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3634722 The Fishing Boat. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 25 1/2 x 32 in. (64.8 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1865.Courbet painted this work during an intensely productive visit to Trouville with James McNeill Whistler from September until November 1865; in a letter to his father, the artist boasted that he had executed "thirty-five paintings" in a very short time, which "stunned everybody." In his choice of subject, Courbet followed in the wake of Eugène Isabey, Johan Barthold Jongkind, and Eugène Boudin; but unlike many of the canvases executed at the time, this fishing boat, rigged and filled with equipment, is the focus of the composition rather than a subordinate element. In 1899, this became the first work by Courbet to enter the Museum's collection. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3671375 A Brook in a Clearing (possibly "Brook, Valley of Fontcouverte; Study"). Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 20 3/4 x 25 1/2 in. (52.7 x 64.8 cm). Date: probably 1862.Courbet is thought to have painted this lush landscape at Fontcouverte, in the Saintonge region of western France. In the summer of 1862 he sketched there alongside Louis-Augustin Auguin (1824-1904), its probable first owner. The canvas may have been included in an exhibition that Courbet and Auguin helped to organize at Saintes in early 1863. Another view of Fontcouverte was exhibited as a collaboration between the artists (whereabouts unknown). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3671313 View of Ornans. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 28 3/4 x 36 1/4 in. (73 x 92.1 cm). Date: probably mid-1850s.This landscape, probably painted in the mid-1850s, stands at the beginning of a long series of views of the countryside of the artist's native town. It may be identified by the distinctive church steeple that rises above the cluster of houses along the banks of the river Loue. The cliff in the distance is the Roche du Mont. The bridge has traditionally been identified as that of the town of Scey-en-Varais, located a few miles downstream from Ornans. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3622827 Madame Auguste Cuoq (Mathilde Desportes, 1827-1910). Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 69 1/2 x 42 1/2 in. (176.5 x 108 cm). Date: ca. 1852-57.Several artists ventured portraits of Mathilde Desportes, including the popular academician Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), but her husband, Auguste Cuoq, found most of them unacceptable. This likeness was among those he rejected, reportedly because he felt that it did not adequately convey his wife's beauty. Courbet appears to have finished the picture to his own satisfaction in 1857, the date he assigned it in the catalogue of the solo exhibition he mounted in Paris in 1867. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3621935 River and Rocks. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 19 5/8 x 23 7/8 in. (49.8 x 60.6 cm). Date: 1873-77.This picture dates to the last years of Courbet's life, from 1873 to 1877, which he spent as an expatriate in Switzerland. Like many landscapes that he produced at this time, it is a variation on the artist's earlier depictions of the beloved terrain of his native France. In order to pay his debts and to meet the growing demand for his work, Courbet often turned to members of his studio for assistance with such canvases. The present painting has been associated with the hand of his student Marcel Ordinaire (1848-1896). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3623065 A Brook in the Forest. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 19 7/8 x 24 1/8 in. (50.5 x 61.3 cm). This landscape is similar to a painting dated 1868, Roe Deer at a Stream (Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas). It may be a preliminary sketch for the larger work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3620609 The Calm Sea. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 28 3/4 in. (59.7 x 73 cm). Date: 1869.Courbet painted this view looking out over the English Channel during a visit to Étretat along the coast of Normandy in August 1869. The ocean has receded at low tide, and two small boats are left on the shore. The tranquil composition, with its immense sky towering over narrow bands of water and sand, is unusual for Courbet's marine paintings of this period, dominated by dramatically crashing waves. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3620745 Madame de Brayer. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 36 x 28 5/8 in. (91.4 x 72.7 cm). Date: 1858.Courbet made this portrait during an 1858 trip to Brussels intended to cultivate a Belgian market for his work. Shown that summer in Antwerp, the picture earned praise for its forthright portrayal of a woman who was not conventionally beautiful, but seemed "strong-willed... and full of spirit." The painting remained in the sitter's family until it was purchased in 1907, at the recommendation of Mary Cassatt, by Louisine and H.O. Havemeyer. Mrs. Havemeyer later recalled that Madame de Brayer was a Polish exile married to a Belgian. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601643 Charles Suisse. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 23 1/4 x 19 3/8 in. (59.1 x 49.2 cm). Date: 1861.Suisse, a former artist's model, established an informal--and extremely liberal--art school in Paris which the young Courbet attended in the mid-1840s. By the time of this portrait, dated to 1861, Manet, Monet, and Pissarro had also studied at the Académie Suisse. The sitter's spectacles and tousled gray hair indicate that he is getting on in age, but his gaze is sharp and animated; a fitting tribute to an early creative influence, painted the same year that Courbet opened a teaching studio of his own. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3601607 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 16 1/4 x 13 1/8 in. (41.3 x 33.3 cm). Date: probably ca. 1862.The distinctive receding hairline and full lips suggest that the sitter for this informal portrait may be the dealer Jules Luquet, a supporter and friend of Courbet's beginning in the 1860s. In size, composition, and handling, the picture is similar to the artist's 1862 portrait of the painter Auguste Fajon (Musée Fabre, Montpellier), and it probably dates to about the same time. Courbet seems to have favored the format for depictions of people he knew well. A more loosely painted canvas in a Swiss private collection has been identified as a study for the present work. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3644350 The Woman in the Waves. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 25 3/4 x 21 1/4 in. (65.4 x 54 cm). Date: 1868.Between 1864 and 1868 Courbet undertook a series of paintings of the female nude. He could not have failed to witness the triumph of Alexandre Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) at the Salon of 1863, along with the popularity of similar representations by Cabanel's fellow academicians. Here, Courbet evokes the myth of Venus, the goddess born of the sea, but slyly subverts convention by depicting the model's underarm hair--an element of realism amplified by the almost palpable quality of her flesh. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3663817 The Source of the Loue. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 39 1/4 x 56 in. (99.7 x 142.2 cm). Date: 1864.Courbet often painted the rocky grotto at the source of the Loue, the river that flows through his native village, Ornans, in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France. This view is probably one of four he mentioned to the dealer Luquet in the spring of 1864, when he wrote: "I've been to the source of the Loue these last days and made four landscapes about 1 meter 40.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3661078 The Sea. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61 cm). Date: 1865 or later.During successive sojourns at Trouville in the mid-1860s, Courbet fully developed the pictorial vocabulary that he used for his distinctive minimalist views of the sea and sky under different conditions of light and weather. This "sea landscape" (paysage de mer), as he called such works, may have been painted along the Normandy coast between 1865 and 1867, or it may be a later studio repetition. alb4403147 Gustave Courbet: Woman with White Stockings (La Femme aux bas blancs), Gustave Courbet, 1864, Oil on canvas, Traditionally, European painters made the nude subject decorous by presenting it as part of an edifying mythological narrative. Here, Courbet smashes that fiction. The nude is not Venus or Diana, but rather a prostitute preparing for the act. The picture's sexual content is frank: her genitalia is fully exposed, indeed placed exactly at the center of the composition, and there are several clues that hint at the prostitution theme. Clothes seem hastily discarded in the background, and she gazes out seductively at an unseen presence—presumably the client—who seems to stand or sit across from her. The path in front of her is well-worn, perhaps meant metaphorically. The graphic display of genitalia suggests that Courbet made this as a private commission. He painted several such explicitly sexual paintings during the 1860s., Overall: 25 9/16 x 31 7/8 in. (65 x 81 cm).
